Inclusive Peek: Miranda Valdovinos

What challenges have you experienced in Siouxland?

Earlier in my life, I struggled with being a first-generation American. Having immigrant parents who did not speak English and were still adapting to their new home, is where my struggles came from. At the same time, Siouxland was adapting to the growing cultural diversity. Growing up, this created a lot of confusion as I did not know how to approach life and what came next—also, trying to find a balance between Mexican culture and the American way of living.

Today I am proud to say both the Siouxland area and I have embraced our diversity and grown immensely. Thankfully, I had the support of my two older sisters, who paved the way for me. My parents also sacrificed so much for my sisters and I, and for that I will be eternally grateful.

How has Siouxland been welcoming?

Siouxland is an incredibly diverse area, it inhabits so many cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Siouxland will always be my home, it is such a warm, inviting, and inclusive region. From cultural parades to fairs there has been such a prevalent embrace of difference. Local businesses have also increasingly become more aware of language barriers and offer multilingual services. For people like me who are first generation, schools offer support services like TRIO that helped me pursue my professional dreams.

What do you want the people of Siouxland to know?

I would like the people of Siouxland to know that if there is anyone who feels as if their dreams are unreachable because of where you live, I assure you they are not. I believe in you and the people of Siouxland believe in you!

“Don’t be afraid to share your struggles because you don’t know who you may inspire.” -Dr. Kamshia Childs
