What challenges have you experienced in Siouxland?

Coming to Siouxland without any family or friends has been hard, literally knowing no one or anything. The winter rules that I have been learning along the way have been a major challenge. But thanks to my husband’s co-workers, neighbors, and the WIT ELL program, we enjoy a happy life and also were able to start a family here.

How has Siouxland been welcoming

It is a lovely place, full of nature and peaceful life. People here have a great sense of cordiality and a kind heart that makes our daily life easy. I felt so welcomed with the WIT ELL program, which helped me improve my verbal skills and my knowledge about the culture and history that influenced my mindset and opened the path to enjoy and appreciate the Midwest life.

What do you want the people of Siouxland to know?

It is a great place to live. You have everything you need for a nice lifestyle: art museum, symphony, orchestra, restaurants, cinema, churches, and the LaunchPad Museum (which my kids and myself enjoy frequently). Snow, spring, summer, fall… life in full color. The four seasons, it’s the best experience I have ever had.

What challenges have you experienced in Siouxland?

Understanding and getting involved in the culture coming from a different country has been a challenge. However, the more we get involved with the community, the easier it gets for us to appreciate and learn about Siouxland. Also, coming from a place with warmer weather, we had to learn a lot about how to handle the winter.

How has Siouxland been welcoming?

Our neighbors have been very welcoming as well as our colleagues at work. In general, most of the people we have met in Sioux City seemed interested in guiding and helping us knowing that we were new in town. We also like the pace of the city (no traffic or noise) and the fact that we can get almost anywhere in a short car ride. We love to eat Midwest BBQ. Also, as there is a Hispanic community in Sioux City, we have been able to find almost everything we like to eat at the South Sioux City Mexican markets.

What do you want the people of Siouxland to know?

I think the people who live in Siouxland should be proud of the place they live. It offers opportunities for everyone and a good atmosphere for families. I foresee Siouxland to continue being a great place to live and work for many years. I think there is an opportunity for the governmental agencies to make sure that people coming from other regions of the world are included in their public policies so that their integration can be more beneficial for everyone.

Two of my favorite quotes:

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans,” John Lennon.

“Don’t trust everything you see, don’t believe everything you hear, and don’t say everything you know,” Unknown.
